Pandemic cancels flights

Kidnapped by Internet – Corona 2019/20 -Too Much Information

You know the subject had to come up sometime in my Blogging – as I am a Travel Blogger / Everyday Things Blogger and a source of useless information too. Right now there is TOO MUCH INFORMATION that is captivating our, well – I speak for myself, attention and stealing hours, both day & night & 2 am.

This has become a Google addiction worldwide. Imagine, SERIOUSLY – STOP for just A SECOND AND CLOSE YOUR EYES – IMAGINE, if we had no Press and brave Journalists, Internet, huge News Channels – would life be better?

There would certainly be less panic. Plenty of toilet paper on shop shelves. Continuing with our vacations or plans for holidays. Flying to meetings on different continents. Attending weddings & funerals worldwide. We would all be blissfully unaware of this Pandemic – this medical emergency that has suddenly struck our planet?

But then, everything would be different in other ways – before much international travel happened we earned less, phoned more, dreamed of achieving less, were satisfied by the small things, knew little of beautiful destinations and fascinating places – who remembers how different life was then?

My grans and grandpas must be looking down upon us in shock and awe. . My Welsh granny used to tell us about the dances they would go to in neighbouring towns when she was a youngster, chaperoned, by horse & cart. Many of you have one of the lanterns from that era in your homes probably. Their headlights were candles burning in a huge glass lantern attached to the cart, which had a beauty of their own. How did the horses know where they were running, weren’t they scared being forced to run into the dark tunnel ahead?

We would miss out on all the hype but also miss out on BEAUTIFUL NEWS OF DOLPHINS & SWANS FINDING THEIR WAY BACK into their Venetian Canals in Italy. Dolphins and Swans swimming down the canals. Cruise Ships have inundated the special Islands over the recent years – can you imagine the canals full of boats and long sticks, the pollution & the noise. Very disturbing for the wildlife. One has to wonder WHERE THEY WENT TO HIDE, from us humans?

We would miss out feeling and witnessing other signs of the universe that is breathing a temporary sigh of relief at the moment. Our stunning earth – struggling wildlife, flora & fauna, oceans, land & air – quietened and cleaned for a short while.

We Google and Siri ADDICTIVELY to find out information and questions that pop into our minds all the time – before Corona existed. Monthly I ask Google what the most visited sites are, the most googled word, the most visited news headlines. Fascinating. Occasionally I will look at a specific day – eg today and guess what comes up? Yup you got it….. COVID-19, Coronavirus – and then specific countries affected follow. Funnily enough, Airlines feature right there at the top too – suppose we are all wondering who is where, how, what, can or should we fly.

I live in Africa and we are behind Asia, Europe, USA and UK with the Coronavirus, COVID-19. As our household and many family members fit into the category of over 60 and with existing medical conditions, it’s necessary to know the next step our Government is taking. What the statistics are. How the devil is spreading through our people. It really becomes an overload of information and we need to walk away, into the garden, stroke a pet, sort out photographs, tidy cupboards to declutter

My In-Laws (3 generations together) were visiting the Bahamas last week. An elder, who is healthy but over 80, ended up in a hospital there with chest pains (apparently Angina not Corona)……. quickly I googled signs & symptoms of Angina…. aargh Too Much Information!!! The very next day flights to their home were stopped. Now what? They need to get back home. So they made a plan, found a flight taking passengers returning to their country – then drove a long way home (instead of another flight). Headed directly to their Hospital, eek a Hospital, for a heart operation. Now ALL are in quarantine hoping they did not contract COVID-19 in Hospital no. 1. Flights to US. Hospital no 2.

As I write now I see “Countries around the world are increasingly adopting sweeping measures to stem the spread of the new Coronavirus, including shutting down airports, imposing travel restrictions and completely sealing their borders”.

It is good to record this in little excerpts because many years on we will look back and wonder what the time line was, how it happened, which countries acted quickly or slowly and how. Our children and children’s children will learn about the 2020 Cornonavirus in the school history lessons or projects. It could even be a Biology or Science Lesson! Then they will discover that there was another catastrophic flu pandemic, the Spanish Flu 1918, 25 000 000 +lives lost (that number varies on the internet so we will never know like we do nowadays – how could they keep exact statistics in a crisis at that time?!)

So for the records – at 4.15 pm on Thursday (the day they collect the garbage (the trucks still arrived today) 19 March 2019, “The outbreak of the Coronavirus has been labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).” I remember learning about WHO at school, a long time ago, and realise how important it is to take on board the school lessons.

South Africa recorded about 116 positive cases on Thursday. Today, Monday 23 March 2020 the number has increased to 402.

On Friday late afternoon most Emirates Airways domestic flights were canceled – our Travel Agent told us it is until 30 June 2020.

All this angst – had to take a walk into the garden – which has always been my “Go TO’ – but much more appreciated today. High up above an airoplane soars over me, and look up – find myself praying for all aboard. Guessing all passengers will be homeward bound as it seems all leisure travel is over for some time.

My mind going back into another zone – of days gone by – good happy travel to family, adventures and work. Already feels like an out of world experience now.

Today I have retired to Blogging from Fogging – OUT OF GOOGLE ADDICTION MODE!!! Gosh we waste a lot of time, don’t we.

Travelers are advised to visit government websites for updated information and more details of each country.

This is all just too much to take in and yet we cannot leave it alone! TMI

We USED to say TMI – Too Much Information with a snicker and sneer, nudge nudge, wink wink , giggle – please stop !

Hi, how are you……. “oh I have such a sore throat again, you know how I get these regular tonsil flare-ups?!”. Look…… and you politely gape through crocodilamus teeth, into the cavernous firey interior to the nether regions of Australia, past the Rockies on a snowy day. OMG. What did I do to deserve this? (not now that Corona is hanging around waiting to invade your safe space, latch onto a nose hair that is tickling in the wind and down your windpipe – don’t “go there”).

Google Siri “Tonsillitis” – hey, pal you gotta have that checked. You must have them out, even though you are over 35 and it is a life-threatening operation, and you can lose your taste buds for life and and and…… too much information – we really must leave Dr Google alone!

Sitting opposite a stunning leggy blonde at a dinner party I ask about the bruise on her head, execting to say – oo shame, sorry about the car accident or the tripping over the dog……. but NOOOO ” James and I were having sex under the table and I bumped my head and……”- TMO (too much information!

Last night, once again, I had midnightitis. Waking about an hour after falling asleep thanks to kitty nibbling my face asking for food, unable to fall asleep again – Googling Covid-19, canceled flights, can cats catch Corona from humans, calming music, nothing much happens bedtime stories for adults.

Followed by …. “Siri – does the Queen fart?”, “are you married”, spell supacalafragalisticexpiaidocious (and she can too!) or me, “do my means make me look fat?”……………………………… She answers them all, so funny.

Sorry, you don’t know who Siri is? She is the microphone you can talk to for easy Google searches. She usually replies with a voice answer, occasionally in script.

At 3.15 am Triaoraphobia overcame me. Silly I know, but the houses creaks most at that time, kitty sits up suddenly and stares into empty dark spaces. the outside light begins to change…. spooky. Wiki TMI!!

It is fun to go off track when current affairs are so extreme. However, returning to journalling about life today – should I say this hour, this minute?! Things are changing so fast – and yet I sit here in my lounge listening to traffic (less now due to School closures for holiday – and will remain closed for however long necessary), listening to the Hadida birds, waiting to Skype my Dad on another Continent. It feels pretty normal.

I am a child of Africa, born in beautiful Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and grew up on a beautiful Tobacco Farm. I've moved many many times and do not really know where I want to put my forever roots down. I have fun doing everyday things away from my home, trying to see the wonderment of life through the eyes of a child. A day out, weekend away, week away...... And months' travelling hold magical memories and events. These are what make me who I am - cautious, adventurous, fun loving & hungry to discover colours, countries, geography, cultures and experiences... and I'm normal too ... tiring travel makes me frowny too sometimes. .... With my lovely life partner (Chris), passport, medical kit, credit card I go..... wherever the wanderings take us..........
